Three short films by directors risking everything to tell their truth. A collaboration with the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk.
As a festival that celebrates queer stories, we must not forget that being able to express yourself without risking persecution and punitive measures is a privilege, not a given. This is why we offer this program, filled with films made by directors who are being persecuted for their work, as they challenge and transgress the cinematic, narrative, and political norms of their home countries. In collaboration with the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk—an organisation that stands in solidarity with and advocates for filmmakers who are at severe and acute risk—we invite you to join us at Slachtstraat and watch this collection of shorts together. Because of the precarity of the filmmakers, we cannot publish their names or the film titles beforehand. Expect a documentary that shows a (literal) race against punitive measures and two challenging coming-of-age shorts that reflect on growing up queer under an oppressive, authoritarian regime. In the films, the themes range from friendship and teenage rebellion against patriarchal societal values to misogyny, transphobia, and the difficulty of navigating family dynamics.
With an introduction video by one of the directors, a digital Q&A with the other director, and Jordi Wijnalda, coordinator of the ICFR, and our moderator this evening.
