Hivos helps LGBTIQ+ activists in life-threatening situations worldwide. Thanks to our supporters, we have started an emergency fund, which allows us to take immediate action when people are in danger.
LGBTIQ+ activists are often the target of threats and violence. Yet, they have the courage to fight for a just society and to stand up for the rights of their community, even in the most complicated situations. Their work is not without risk.
How we work
When emergency aid is needed, we have to act as quickly as possible. To be able to do that, Hivos makes use of a huge network in over 20 countries. We work together with large and small LGBTIQ+ organizations that are in close contact with our colleagues. This keeps the lines of communication short and helps us to know quickly when someone is in danger.
Last year, we assisted 41 activists in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America who were in immediate danger. One of them was Leticia, director of a queer youth organization in Uganda. “The police arrested me and my colleagues and ransacked our office.”
Our emergency fund came to the aid of Leticia and his colleagues. “The police knew where we lived. Thanks to the fund, we were able to move to safer and anonymous accommodations. We also received funding to rent a storage space where we now store confidential documents. And we received psychological support, because the police raid and arrest left us depressed and anxious.”
Vital
In Uganda, an emergency fund is vital for LGBTIQ+ activists. “The situation in our country is extremely tense. Due to the strict anti-gay law, we live in constant fear. We can no longer walk the streets safely and freely because we run the risk of being arrested, abused or even murdered,” says Leticia.
Unfortunately, support is still desperately needed. Every day, LGBTIQ+ people are confronted with hatred, violence and abuse. With contributions from donors, we can supplement the fund and continue to protect courageous activists.
