Queer Movies & Voguing Night
August 24, 2022 @ 18:00 – 23:00
Queer Film Festival Utrecht organizes in cooperation with Centraal Museum/Cinema Centraal a unique evening full of queerness inside and outside the museum. Sign up for a guided tour on sexuality in art or join one of the three voguing workshops of Utrecht Ballroom Scene. Then watch two different Dutch shorts about ballroom culture and end the evening by enjoying Una Mujer Fantastica. This Oscar winning film about a trans woman in Chile transcends both genre and gender.
There are several ticket options for attending all, or part of the evening.
Guided tour: Queer, gender and sexuality in art
There will be several guided tours of the Central Museum’s exhibition ‘The Healthy City’. How is sexuality central to art? Which gender perspectives do we see and what is the time image of this? In small groups you will be updated on this theme.
Workshops Voguing
Utrecht Ballroom Scene is a community for and by queer and trans people (of color). Learn the basics of ballroom dancing and vogue in 60 minutes. You can choose from three workshops. Strike a pose!
Short: Father Figure
It can be difficult for young black gay men to find a way in this world, as it was for Guilliano. He wasn’t sure about himself until he discovered voguing: he has come to accept himself more. What does it mean to be young, black and gay in today’s society? The shorts at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. will be personally introduced by lead actor Guilliano.
Short: Queer Mercury
In the documentary Queer Mercury, Erik Peters explores inclusive futures by following three members of the Dutch ballroom scene – Nubia Génisis, Sarafina Paulina Bonita and Monika Vineyard – in their preparations for the 2021 Utopia Ball in Rotterdam.
Outdoor film: ’Una Mujer Fantastica’
At the center of it all is 27-year-old Marina Vidal, singer and transgender who has begun a love affair with Orlando, who is 20 years older. Marina works, in modern Santiago, as a waitress and singer in a nightclub. When her boyfriend Orlando dies unexpectedly, she faces a lot of headwinds from his family and the authorities. In this combative, imaginative film, that headwind is even portrayed literally. After all, Marina is not just any woman, but a fantastic woman. Chilean director Sebastian Lelio won an Oscar for best non-English-language film with this film in 2018. He intelligently confronts the viewer with projections about transgender people in this ode to Marina, played extremely well by Daniela Vega. Marina is unique and escapes any label. Una Mujer Fantástica transcends both genre and gender, which makes it difficult to put into a box. At its core it is a drama, but at the same time the film also possesses the DNA of a thriller and even a comedy.
