QFFU x Kaboom: Queer Animation Shorts & Workshop
September 3, 2023 @ 20:00 – 22:30
Eclectic mix of queer animation shorts from Kaboom Animation Festival, followed by an animation workshop by Mackenzie Fincham. For the workshop afterwards 20 seats are available. Order your tickets on time.
One Night Out – Seungah Yoo (USA, 2022, 2 minutes)
One Night Out is a 3D animated film that follows the story of three characters and their relationships. Deep in the night, a car carrying a man and a young woman is abruptly caught by a lady in pajamas. And then… there’s a twist.
Outside the Lines – Stan Oversteegen (The Netherlands, 2023, 5 minutes)
Outside the lines is a short animated documentary in which three young queer people share their experiences on what it’s like to deviate from the straight cis-norm. Throughout the film, painful experiences make room for a more positive perspective, such as the overwhelming sense of connection with millions of other queer individuals worldwide or the freedom that arises as one can relinquish certain expectations. In black-and-white scenes, this so-called ‘queer-joy’ is being discovered, providing inspiring and moving insight
Sasha – Serghei Chiviriga (Romania, 2022, 13 minutes)
Confused by the whole world and his own body, an insecure teen snail is forced to discover the truth about his sexual identity by confronting his other half. Playing with the fact that snails are hermaphrodites, Moldovan director Serghei Chiviriga’s second short is an offbeat 2D-animation coming-of-age story with a few surprises up its sleeve.
Coming out autistic – Steven Fraser (UK, 2022, 4 minutes)
Animated on mobile devices, Coming Out Autistic is an original queer short animated documentary that explores the experience of telling the world that you are autistic when you also identify as LGBTQIA+. Emphasizing the passionate, funny and important words and actions that are witnessed, Steven Fraser’s short offers a platform to queer people that are often overlooked.
Franceska – Alberto Cano (Spain, 2021, 7 minutes)
On a chilly night, a haunting atmosphere lingers over Frankenstein’s ancient castle. Victor, a daring scientist eager to challenge the laws of nature, embarks on his most ambitious endeavor: to resurrect his beloved Franceska. With the help, or lack thereof, from Igor, his devoted and invaluable assistant, Victor confronts the ultimate test of his career.
Blush – An Extraordinary Voyage – Liti Yli-Harja (Finland, 2022, 15 minutes)
For 18-year-old Finnish–Kosovan Fatu, a simple visit to the grocery store feels as nerve-racking as a lunar expedition: for the first time in his life, he’s wearing makeup in public. Luckily his best friend Rai, a young woman on the spectrum of autism, is there to ferociously support him through the voyage.
Questbound – Forbidden Ventures of the Undead – Alexander Bierling, Owen Buckley (the Netherlands, 2022, 8 minutes)
Nothing could excite the great king, but then along came a noble knight… But is the undead king flirting? Infused with delightful humor and some welcome nerdiness, Questbound is a medieval fantasy story embracing that even undead kings have primal needs.
Workshop Sharing is Caring – Mackenzie Fincham (21:15 tot 22:30)
After getting inspired by the Queer Animation Shorts, you’ll have the opportunity to get creative yourself. You can listen to stories of first queer crushes from your fellow participants or share your own experience with first love. Following a discussion, you will visually capture these stories under the professional guidance of Mackenzie Fincham. Kaboom and QFFU would love to exhibit the artwork created during the workshop at a possible upcoming event.
