Petite Maman is Céline Sciamma’s first feature film since queer hit Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu. In Petite Maman, the director returns to her roots for a coming-of-age story in which the boundaries between the present and the past blur.
After her grandmother dies, eight year old Nelly explores the house and surroundings of the house her mother grew up in. In the woods, she meets another young girl. Slowly, she realizes she knows the girl, but who is she? Nelly discovers that her mother was once young, and it helps her understand who her mother is.
Sciamma made Petite Maman during the 2020 lockdown, which makes for an intimate and intriguing story.
